Indiana State University recently welcomed a group of high-achieving high school students from Illinois as part of its continued partnership with the Edgar and Clark County Executive Leadership (ECCEL) program – an initiative designed to cultivate leadership and prepare students for success beyond high school.

The ECCEL program brings together students from Paris, Marshall, and Casey-Westfield high schools in Edgar and Clark counties. Participants meet multiple times each week during the school day, engaging in leadership development experiences that challenge them to think critically about their futures and the impact they hope to make.

Through Indiana State’s partnership with ECCEL, students traveled to campus to explore academic programs, connect with faculty and staff, and gain a firsthand look at college life. The visit emphasized leadership, goal setting, and career exploration—encouraging students to take ownership of their futures.

A highlight of the day was an Elevator Pitch Competition led by Dr. David Fleming, who heads Indiana State’s nationally recognized Sales Team. After learning the fundamentals of crafting an effective one-minute pitch, students put their skills to the test by presenting pitches aimed at securing a job or scholarship opportunity.

Emma Kraemer of Paris High School earned top honors in the competition, receiving a $250 promissory scholarship to the Scott College of Business.

“Building connections with Indiana State University while still in high school can truly elevate a student’s journey,” said Mallory Eilbracht, Boulet Mentoring Program Coordinator. “Early exposure to the Scott College of Business gives students a chance to connect with faculty, experience campus life, and start seeing themselves turning their goals into reality.”

Students also heard from admissions counselor Shannon Delph, who provided an overview of Indiana State’s academic offerings, campus life, and scholarship opportunities—offering a glimpse into what their future could look like as Sycamores.

The ECCEL visit reflects Indiana State’s ongoing commitment to building strong regional partnerships and empowering the next generation of leaders through early engagement, mentorship, and hands-on learning experiences.
