Indiana State University President Mike Godard has announced the appointment of Ardell J. Sanders as the University’s new Chief of Staff. Sanders currently serves as Associate Vice President for Student Experience and Engagement and will transition into the role in the coming weeks.
Sanders succeeds Rex Kendall, who served Indiana State University with distinction as Chief of Staff before his passing on January 7.
“Ardell Sanders is a trusted leader with a deep understanding of Indiana State University and a proven ability to translate vision into action,” President Godard said. “He brings strong strategic insight, sound judgment, and a collaborative approach that will serve our institution well as we continue advancing our Strategic Plan and strengthening alignment across the University.”
In his current role, Sanders provides executive oversight for Residential Life, Student Activities and Organizations, Student Government Association, major campus traditions and signature events, and emerging student engagement initiatives. He is widely respected for strengthening leadership teams, improving organizational structures, and advancing student-centered practices that support retention, belonging, and leadership development.
As Chief of Staff, Ardell will serve as a member of the University’s executive leadership team and support the President’s Office directly in advancing institutional priorities, strengthening coordination across divisions, and ensuring that planning and execution move forward with clarity and purpose.
Sanders said he is honored by President Godard’s trust and mindful of the legacy of his predecessor.
“Rex Kendall exemplified integrity, service, and deep love for Indiana State University,” Sanders said. “I am committed to honoring his legacy through thoughtful, collaborative leadership focused on the University’s future.”
President Godard also reflected on Kendall’s lasting impact.
“Rex was a remarkable colleague and friend who dedicated his career to this University and its people,” Godard said. “His legacy will continue to guide our work, and we are grateful for the foundation he helped build.”
Sanders’ appointment supports Indiana State University’s continued focus on student success, institutional effectiveness, and strategic alignment.
