Indiana State welcomes Class of 2017-18 Sycamore Teacher Leaders

Sycamore Teacher Leader scholarships provide first-year students with full in-state tuition for four years, an additional $3,000 professional development account and participate in the Bayh College of Education Scholars to Teachers (BEST) Program.

Ten incoming Indiana State University students have been selected to receive the 2017-18 Sycamore Teacher Leader Scholarship.

Sycamore Teacher Leader scholarships provide first-year students with full in-state tuition for four years and an additional $3,000 professional development account. Recipients are students in the Bayh College of Education who intend to major in elementary, secondary or special education. Recipients were selected based on high academic achievement, leadership, service and desire to become a high-quality educator.

These scholars will become the next teacher leaders and be part of the Bayh College of Education Scholars to Teachers (BEST) Program. The BEST Program focuses on leadership, professional development, community service and engagement and mentoring. Opportunities for research and presentations are also included. These students create and implement events and programs that serve the campus and greater community. BEST Scholars will become educational professionals who transform lives and communities through inclusive excellence.

This year's recipients are:

• Nina Greene of Chicago was a member of the volleyball and the track teams all four years of high school. Greene will pursue a major in elementary education.

 

 

 

• Tabitha Pappas of Dyer, Ind., participated in the publication team for two years, was captain of the lacrosse team for one year and various other leadership clubs during her four years in high school. Pappas will pursue a major in English teaching.

 

 

• Allison Washburn of Brookville, Ind., was a member of National Honor Society, soccer team, tennis team and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Washburn will pursue a major in elementary education.

 

 

 

• Kylie Seibert of Jasper, Ind., was a member of the cheerleading team during her four years at Jasper High School. Seibert will pursue a major in elementary education.

 

• Reece Grapenthien of Crown Point, Ind., was a member of the National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars and CPTV student broadcasting while in high school. He also was a part of the work-based learning and internship program and helped manage the football team. Grapenthien will pursue a major in elementary education.

 

 

• Sydney Scherry of Santa Claus, Ind., was a member of the volleyball and basketball teams in high school. She also was a member of the National Honor Society and was on the student council. Scherry will pursue a major in elementary education.

 

 

• Victoria Mahoney of Seymour, Ind., she participated in marching band, concert band and show choir in high school. She also was a member of National Honor Society, archery club and helped with her church youth group. Mahoney will pursue a major in music education.

 

 

• Claire Collins of Winamac, Ind., was captain for the cross-country and track teams for four years, a member of the basketball team, athletic leadership council president and a member of the Fellowships of Christian Athletes' leadership team while in high school. She was also on the National Honor Society, student council and Sunshine Society co-president. Collins will pursue a major in elementary education.

 

• Emma Hanebutt of Evanston, Ind., was a member of the swim team, National Honor Society, BETA club, student council and Optimist Club. Hanebutt will pursue a major in mathematics teaching.

 

 

• Renea Spannagel of Villa Grove, Ill., was on the student council, class secretary, a member of Future Farmers of America and 4-H. She was also a member of band, scholastic bowl team and cheerleading team. Spannagel will pursue a major in mathematics teaching.
