Students at Indiana State University recently put their communication skills to the test during the biannual Airworx Elevator Pitch Competition – an event designed to simulate the fast-paced demands of professional sales and networking.
Hosted by the University’s Sales and Negotiations Center, the competition began with 62 students submitting video entries. From that pool, a select group of finalists advanced to the in-person competition held April 17 in Federal Hall. There, participants were challenged to think quickly, communicate clearly, and perform under pressure.
Finalists delivered two presentations: a prepared one-minute pitch highlighting a meaningful academic or professional opportunity they had pursued, followed by an impromptu pitch. For the second round, students were sequestered and given just one minute to prepare a response about a time they stepped up in a challenging situation – mirroring real-world scenarios where adaptability and confidence are key.
The competition not only tested students’ abilities but also connected them with industry professionals. Judges included recruiters and representatives from leading organizations such as Airworx, Cintas, Enterprise Holdings, Sherwin-Williams, and others, along with staff from the University’s Career Center. Following the competition, students received direct feedback and professional insights from the panel.
“It is great to see the students embrace being uncomfortable in order to grow and develop their skill sets as prospective employees,” said Dr. David Fleming, Director of the Scott College of Business Sales & Negotiation Center.
