Indiana State University has named Jason Johnson Executive Director of Residential Life, recognizing a proven leader whose work has helped strengthen the residential experience for Sycamores and support student success across campus.
 
Johnson has served as interim executive director since February 2026, providing leadership for one of the University’s most student-facing operations while continuing to advance strategic priorities tied to student belonging, engagement, and retention. He brings more than 15 years of experience in residential life, with deep expertise in residential operations, occupancy strategy, living-learning communities, student success initiatives, and cross-divisional collaboration.
 
As Executive Director of Residential Life, Johnson will continue leading the University’s residential life strategy, overseeing operations, staff leadership, and student-centered initiatives designed to enhance the on-campus experience and support student persistence and success.
 
“Jason has demonstrated steady leadership, operational excellence, and a clear commitment to student success throughout his time at Indiana State,” said Nancy Rogers, Vice President for Student Experience and Engagement. “He understands the critical role Residential Life plays in building community, supporting student belonging, and helping students thrive both inside and outside the classroom. We are pleased to have him continue leading this important work.”
 
Johnson has served as Director of Operations and Strategic Partnerships for Residential Life since January 2023, where he helped guide strategic planning, operational management, and partnership development across the department. Prior to that, he served as Associate Director for Academic Initiatives for Residential Life from August 2017 to January 2023, leading efforts to strengthen academic support and student engagement through residential programming and learning initiatives.
 
Before joining Indiana State, Johnson served in multiple leadership roles at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, including Assistant Director for Living Learning Programs for Housing & Residence Life from 2014 to 2017 and Residential Learning Coordinator for Housing & Residence Life from 2010 to 2014.
 
Throughout his time at Indiana State, Johnson has been recognized for his leadership and impact on students and campus life. His honors include the Distinguished Service Award (2022–23), Embodiment of Self-Efficacy Award (2021–22), and Educator of the Year (2019–20).
 
Johnson’s appointment reflects Indiana State University’s continued investment in creating a strong residential experience that supports student belonging, academic success, and community connection – key components of the University’s commitment to delivering an exceptional student experience.
