As a result of a trust established in memory of ISU's seventh president, Raleigh Holmstedt, this award or grant is awarded annually to one member of the College of Education faculty who has demonstrated a long and distinguished career of teaching, scholarship, and service.
Recipients of the Holmstedt Distinguished Professor honor must be College of Education faculty members who have attained the rank of associate or professor with a minimum of 10 years of service to Indiana State. Honorees must devote at least three-fourths of their professional work to teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, research and service. In addition, the award may be presented only once to any qualifying individual.
"I am extremely pleased that Dr. Barratt was selected as this year's Holmstedt Distinguished Professor for the College of Education," said Bradley Balch, dean of ISU's College of Education. "To be selected among one's peers is an exceptional honor, and Dr. Barratt's record of teaching, service and scholarship distinguishes him among his colleagues."
Within the College, Barratt teaches courses on student affairs, higher education, diversity, consultation, campus environments, program evaluation and leadership theory and practice. His research and consulting work focus primarily on social class on campus, information technology in student affairs, evaluation of student affairs department Web presence and program evaluation.
Barratt earned his bachelor's degree in history and philosophy (1972) from Beloit College, his master's in personnel counseling (1973) from Miami University, and his Ph.D. in student development in post-secondary education (1983) from the University of Iowa. He has been a faculty member at ISU since 1984.
The award is not a cash award. Instead, it allows for scholarly travel, research materials, or equipment, and/or funding of fellowships or assistantships for graduate students to assist the recipient in his or her research and instructional activities.
"I am very pleased to be the Holmstedt Distinguished Professor for 2006-2007 and have been nicely surprised with the number of congratulations and support from my colleagues," Barratt said. "I have an exciting research project on college student learning outcomes this year and am grateful for the support from the College of Education and the ISU Foundation. I hope to continue the tradition of strong scholarship that has been associated with this award and I am looking forward to integrating what I learn into my teaching."
