Indiana State University received approval from the State Budget Committee for a $4.2 million renovation project that will modernize and transform the Commons area of the Hulman Memorial Student Union, further enhancing the student experience at the heart of campus.

The project will renovate approximately 24,000 gross square feet within the Hulman Memorial Student Union Commons, addressing aging infrastructure needs including mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and building envelope improvements. The renovation will also create a new 7,000-square-foot university bookstore within the existing facility footprint while reimagining the Commons into a more modern, flexible, and student-centered gathering space.

“This investment represents a significant step forward in strengthening the student experience at Indiana State University,” said Indiana State University President Mike Godard. “The Hulman Memorial Student Union is a central hub for connection and engagement on our campus, and these renovations will deliver a modern, flexible space that better supports how our students learn, collaborate, and build community. This project reflects our continued commitment to student success and advances the priorities outlined in our Take Root & Rise strategic plan.”

The renovation project includes updated flooring, lighting, furnishings, wall finishes, and refreshed gathering spaces designed to better support student engagement, campus events, and collaborative learning opportunities. Dining operations within the Commons will also be reconfigured to improve functionality and accommodate the new bookstore space.

The bookstore component of the project is part of Indiana State’s new partnership with Follett Higher Education, which will relocate bookstore operations into a dedicated space within the Commons. The project aligns with the University’s Strategic Plan by supporting exceptional student experience and enhancing campus spaces that foster connection, belonging, and student engagement.

Construction is expected to begin later this summer, with the renovated Commons and bookstore anticipated to open in time for the Spring 2027 semester.
