The Indiana State University School of Music will present a Fall Choral Showcase Concert Friday evening, October 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the University Hall Theater, located in University Hall on the Indiana State campus.
The concert will feature three Indiana State University choral ensembles. The University Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Scott Buchanan, will perform a program of diverse repertoire composed or arranged by contemporary American and Canadian composers. “It is important for young music students to experience, through performance, the music of living composers,” said Buchanan. “There is so much wonderful music being written today. Our audience should really enjoy the variety of music that is on this program. It is going to be a nice evening.” Indiana State music student Hannah Kirkwood, from Marshall, IL, will serve as the accompanist.
The Women’s Choir will also offer a diverse program including works by contemporary composers Laura Farnell, Stacey Nordmeyer, Andy Beck, Elaine Hagenberg, and Arrian Norman. Dr. Yana Weinstein will conduct the ensemble, with Jin Hee Kim serving as accompanist.
The Sycamore Singers will open the concert with a rousing 20-minute medley from the Broadway hit, Les Misérables. The well-crafted collection features many of the show’s most recognizable tunes, including Master of the House, On My Own, Castle on a Cloud, Bring Him Home, Do You Hear the People Sing?, and others. The arrangement includes several solos and will highlight a number of Indiana State’s accomplished vocal performers.
“It’s always exciting to share the hard work and dedication of our students and faculty in the School of Music with our local community,” added College of Arts and Sciences Dean Melinda Roberts.
The concert is free and open to the public. For information, please call 812-237-2763.
