Indiana State University, along with ABATE of Indiana, will conduct motorcycle rider education courses beginning in May.
Basic and experienced rider courses will be offered.
The fee for the basic rider course, designed for beginning riders, is $75. No permit or license is required for this course. Those who successfully complete the basic rider course are waived from taking the state skills licensing test and may qualify for an insurance discount. Those who register must be must be 15 years or older, and those under 18 must have parental consent.
The experienced rider course fee is $50 and is designed for experienced riders who want to increase their knowledge of street-riding strategies or obtain their motorcycle endorsement if still riding with a permit. The course offers riders the opportunity to practice advanced street-riding skills on their own motorcycle in a controlled environment.
Both courses include classroom and on-cycle training. The class will meet in the ISU Nursing Building, located on the corner of Eighth and Chestnut streets. On-cycle training will take place at the ISU driving range, located at the corner of Ninth and Eagle Streets.
Participants must provide their own helmets, gloves and eye protection and dress in over-the-ankle boots, long-sleeved shirts or jackets with long pants. Rain gear is also required.
Motorcycles will be furnished by ISU for the basic rider course. Those who enroll in the experienced rider course must use their own motorcycles and provide proof of motorcycle insurance. All motorcycles must pass an on-site safety inspection.
