TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - A professor of trumpet/cornet from China's Central Conservatory will perform as part of the Indiana State University Visiting Artist Concert Series at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 in the Recital Hall of the ISU Center for Performing and Fine Arts, at Seventh and Chestnut streets.
Among the works Dai Zhonghui will perform are Antonio Vivaldi's "Concerto for Two Trumpets," assisted by Indiana State music faculty members Martha Krasnican and Michael Mann; Eric Ewazen's "Pastorale," assisted by music faculty member Bryan Heath and "La Conteur," by James Klages. He will be accompanied by Krasnican during performances of "Carnival of Venice," by Herbert L. Clarke and Eugene Bozza's "Badinage."
Zhonghui, a nationally acclaimed as a performer and brass instructor, has held the position of principal trumpet of the National Symphony Orchestra of China for the past 10 years. With this orchestra, he has performed in Germany, England, Austria, South America, Australia, Japan, Spain, Holland, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and more than twenty cities in mainland China. He joined the faculty of the Central Conservatory of Music in 2002, and is the trumpet professor, head of Brass and the founder and Director of the Central Conservatory Brass Ensemble. He is also the director and conductor of the Central Conservatory of Music Symphonic Winds Orchestra.
He has made five CD recordings with Philips Recording Company. He is frequently invited to perform as a soloist for studio recordings for movies, television and commercial work in Beijing. As an educator, he has made two albums of CD recordings and two sets of video recordings for educational purposes with three top recording companies in China. He gives trumpet masterclasses, recitals and serving as a judge for many competitions in China and internationally.
As conductor he has worked with Tian Jin Symphony Orchestra, HeBei Symphony Orchestra, China National Symphony Orchestra, China Film Symphony Orchestra and many music school orchestras.
Zhonghui served as Visiting Associate Professor of Trumpet at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music of National University of Singapore in 2006/2007 academic year. He serves as president of China Trumpet Guild, vice president of Chinese Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles and is a member of the International Trumpet Guild Board of Directors.
