Indiana State University honored its police at the fourth biennial recognition and commendation dinner Wednesday (April 25) at the Rod & Gun Club. The evening was sponsored by First Financial Bank.
Receiving Commendation Awards for performing services or acts deserving of official recognition were Capt. Brent Denny; Lts. Jeff Bellinger and David Smith; Sgts. Brenda Edington, Jacquelyn Smith and Wendell McCollough; Cpls. Justin Sears, Nathan Hills and Ian Loomis; and Officers William Hughes, James Hawkins, Heather Cummings and Mark Crawn.
Capt. Denny also received the Life Saving Award for an incident last May in which he rescued a family of four from an off-campus fire he discovered while on bike patrol.
The Civilian Award, which recognizes non-sworn personnel of the department who have performed creditable acts or for outstanding performance for a period of two years, was presented to Pei-Yi Hu, Scott Whitlow and communications officer Carey Sturgeon.
Certificates of appreciation for the 2005-2006 Adopt-a-Hall programs were presented to Sgts. Brenda Edington and Jacquelyn Smith and Officers Meredith Ditz and Mark Crawn. The program proactively involves public safety staff in the Residence Life program by assigning then to specific residence halls.
Lt. David Smith and Sgt. Jacquelyn Smith received certificates of appreciation for their contributions as instructors in the Rape Aggression Defense Class offered to ISU students and staff.
Capts. Russell Floyd and Brent Denny; Lt. David Smith; Sgts. Jacquelyn Smith and Brenda Edington; and Cpls. Justin Sears and Nathan Hills received certificates of appreciation for their work with the bike school for regional police departments.
Recognized for their work with the National Night Out program were Capts. Russell Floyd and Brent Denny; Lt. David Smith; Sgts. Jacquelyn Smith, Wendell McCollough and Brenda Edington; and Cpls. Justin Sears and Nathan Hills. The program promotes safety for individuals after dark.
Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Capt. Russell Floyd; Lt. David Smith; Sgts. Jacquelyn Smith and Brenda Edington; Cpl. Ian Loomis; Officer Mark Crawn, traffic and parking supervisor Lori Elkins; Indiana Data and Communication System (IDACS) coordinator Tonia Tucker; and administrative assistant Kelly Hall for their work with the 2005-2006 Police Youth Camp.
Certificates of appreciation for the 2005-2006 Safety Days program, a cooperative display by area law enforcement agencies at Honey Creek Mall, were presented to Lt. David Smith; Sgts. Jacquelyn Smith and Brenda Edington; Cpls. Justin Sears and Ian Loomis; Officers Heather Cummings and Mark Crawn; and administrative assistant Kelly Hall.
Lts. Jeff Bellinger and David Smith; Sgt. Brenda Edington; and communications officer Sandra Woolley were presented with the Good Conduct Award. This award recognizes personnel who have completed five years of valuable service to the department without a valid suspension or reprimand.
Years of service to the deplartment wre recognized with the Meritorious Service Award. Honored at the dinner were Sgt. Brenda Edington, communications officer Sandra Woolley, records clerk Teresa Evans, administrative assistant Kelly Hall and traffic and parking supervisor Lori Elkins, five years; Capt. Brent Denny and IDACS coordinator Tonia Tucker, 10 years; Lt. David Smith, 20 years. Lt. Jeff Bellinger, f25 years and Officer David Glick, 30 years. Retiring personnel Capt. Russell Floyd and Cpl. Jack McFarland, 35 years. Officers William Hughes, 32 years, and Ed Damann, 10 years, were also honored.
