Indiana State University proudly announces its involvement in the “Grow Up in West Central Indiana” initiative, a comprehensive effort aimed at improving the quality of life for children and families in the region. The strategic plan, supported by Indiana State University, Ivy Tech Terre Haute, and the Lilly Endowment’s College and Community Collaboration (CCC), was officially launched today with the announcement of its key findings and action items.

“Grow Up in West Central Indiana” focuses on strengthening child care systems in Clay, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo counties. It aims to support employers, families, and child care providers, fostering early learning and childhood development. The plan was developed through extensive data collection, identifying gaps and opportunities, and offering strategic objectives and actionable strategies to enhance child care across the region.

“We are honored to be part of this transformative effort,” said Dr. Mike Godard, President of Indiana State University. “Focusing on the well-being of children and families in our region ensures a brighter future for West Central Indiana. Indiana State University has been training teachers since 1865, and we plan to use this data to help our faculty, students, and community partners understand the need for quality early childhood education to support families and the workforce.”

The strategic plan outlines a roadmap for creating sustainable growth through initiatives that foster educational success from early childhood through higher education. Indiana State University will contribute to these efforts through its teacher education, public health, and social work programs and by expanding its Early Childhood Education Center.

Key objectives of the plan include:

  • Increase and expand access to high-quality care, striving to eliminate barriers and extend quality child care services to families from all backgrounds.
  • Foster partnerships with local employers and organizations, acknowledging the pivotal role these programs play in the region regarding employee retention and recruitment. This objective seeks to leverage opportunities for employers to actively contribute to and support child care initiatives.
  • Expand and promote early childhood educators and workforce development, seeking to create robust pathways for professional and educational growth.
  • Focus on resource generation and strategic leveraging of funding opportunities, ensuring the sustained financial health of child care initiatives.
