ISU’s Bayh College of Education receives full accreditation for educator preparation

Indiana State University received full accreditation from The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), a premier body that applied rigorous standards to its assessment of programs in the Bayh College of Education.

“CAEP accreditation is important as it serves as a nationally recognized seal of approval for the quality of our educator preparation programs,” said Janet Buckenmeyer, Dean of the Bayh College of Education. “Students entering ISU can be assured that our educator programs prepare them to teach students first. Infused in all coursework is a focus on content mastery and clinical training that allows them to enter the classroom ready to teach effectively.”

The spring 2020 review by the CAEP Accreditation Council resulted in 60 newly-accredited Educator Preparation Providers (EPPs), ISU among them, bringing the total to 341 providers approved. The CAEP Teacher Preparation Standards are rigorous, nationally recognized standards developed to ensure excellence in educator preparation programs. 

EPPs seeking CAEP accreditation must pass peer review on five standards based on two principles: 1) Solid evidence that the provider’s graduates are competent and caring educators, and 2) Solid evidence that the provider’s educator staff have the capacity to create a culture of evidence and use it to maintain and enhance the quality of the professional programs they offer.

“Teacher education at ISU has a long, rich history,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Mike Licari. “One hundred fifty years ago, Indiana State University was founded as Indiana State Normal School in order to prepare teachers, and this CAEP accreditation extends the legacy.”

Sixteen ISU programs now have CAEP accreditation. They are art education, elementary education, English education, ESL education, early childhood education minor, math education, music education, physical education, science education, social studies education, special education (undergraduate), technology education, world languages, school building leadership – M.Ed school administration and supervision, school district leadership – Ed.S. school administration, and Ed.S. school psychology.
