Indiana State University honored state Sen. David Long for his decades of leadership and service Monday in Fort Wayne.
President Deborah Curtis presented Long (R-Fort Wayne) the President’s Award for Distinguished Public Service and Outstanding Achievement at a reception at the Grand Wayne Convention Center.
A member of the Senate since 1996, Long has served as president pro tempore of the Indiana State Senate since 2006.
“We appreciate Sen. Long’s distinguished tenure of legislative leadership and support for public higher education across the state of Indiana,” Curtis said. “Sen. Long’s interest in and support for Indiana State University goes back a long way, and we are so grateful.”
Among other duties, Long is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Senate, appointing all committee chairs and assigning all legislation to the various Senate committees. He is set to retire Nov. 6.
Among Long’s accomplishments include support for higher education funding, transportation and infrastructure and economic development. He was especially helpful with the creation of the Indiana Principal Leadership Institute (IPLI) located on the Indiana State campus. A dozen Allen County educators have participated in the two-year professional development program.
Prior to his Senate tenure, Long served on the Fort Wayne City Council for eight years. Long’s community involvement includes serving on the boards of Junior Achievement, the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Wayne, the Lincoln Museum, the Fort Wayne Urban Enterprise Zone and the Fort Wayne Plan Commission.
Long earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Davis and a juris doctorate degree from the University of Santa Clara. Long plans to continue practicing law after retiring from public service.
He is employed as general counsel for Pizza Hut of Fort Wayne Inc. Long and his wife, Melissa, have two children.
