TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Hot Rod magazine publisher Jerry Pitt is so excited about what Indiana State University is doing in regard to motorsports education that he has decided to support two full-price camperships for ISU’s first Summer Youth Motorsports Camp, July 15-21. Total value of the camperships is almost $700.

“If you have a passion for being in an automotive career that’s technology-based, you really have to start at a young age. You have to grow that passion,” Pitt said. “I think ISU’s programs will create a wealth of future employees for companies that really need some leadership.”

Campers will be awarded the Hot Rod Camperships based as much on need as on merit. Applicants will be asked to talk about or demonstrate their passion – not necessarily for automobiles or motorsports – but for anything in which they are deeply interested. Applicants also will be asked to explain how motorsports can positively contribute to the environment. In addition to the camperships, Hot Rod also will be supplying campers and counselors with Hot Rod caps, stickers and complimentary copies of the magazine.

ISU’s week-long, residential camp is designed for youth ages 9 to 14 who are interested in a future career in motorsports or a related field. The camp has a multi-faceted approach to motorsports, including the technical and business sides of the industry. Participants will learn and have fun with members of Indiana’s growing motorsports community, including championship NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) and IRL (Indy Racing League) teams. Field trips to races and tracks, driver visits and presentations, and big prize giveaways will add excitement throughout the week.

The camp is limited to the top 30 applicants and requires a 100-200 word essay written by the youth applicant. Online registration forms for both the camp and Hot Rod Camperships are available at ISU’s motorsports studies Web site at www.indstate.edu/motorsports. The deadline for applications has been extended to June 5. Cost is $349 per person (residential only), and payment is due once the applicant has been notified of acceptance (by July 1).
