More than 20 Indiana State University students took home awards from the university's Undergraduate and Graduate Research Showcase, sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Graduate Studies.
Students made oral and poster presentations of their research, competing in three categories: biological/medical science, physical/earth science, and social science/fine arts/humanities.
In biological/medical science, Lavakumar Karyampudi, a doctoral student in life sciences, placed first among graduate student oral presentations while John Lesku, doctoral student in ecology and organismal biology, was second. Andrea Bootman of Lawrenceville, Ill., a junior majoring in ecology and organismal biology, had the top undergraduate presentation. Timothy C. Roth II had the best graduate poster presentation while Jon Storm was second. Roth and Storm are doctoral students in ecology and organismal biology. First place for undergraduate poster went to Ashley Whitehead of Benton, Ill. while Jaron Scott of Terre Haute placed second. Whitehead and Scott are junior life sciences majors.
In physical/earth science, Jodie Gibson was the top winner among graduate oral presentations while Candranath Basak was second. Both are master's degree students in geology. Rebecca Coates of Lafayette had the best oral presentation among undergraduates with David Young of Terre Haute placing second. Both are junior physics majors. First place among graduate poster presentations went to Tsung-Hsien Lee, master's student in mathematics, while Lu Tao, a doctoral student in geography, was second. Sophomore chemistry majors Rachael Chase of Freelandville and Jessica Wright of Robinson, Ill. teamed up to take first place for undergraduate posters while Justin Hadar, senior chemistry major from Sullivan, was second.
In social science/fine arts and humanities, senior political science major Samuel Snideman of Anderson had the best undergraduate oral presentation with Brandy Joliff, senior history major from Terre Haute, placing second. Kristen Lantto, master's student in school psychology, had the top graduate student poster presentation. Jeff Cutright, master's degree student in languages, literature and linguistics, was second. The top undergraduate poster was presented by senior psychology major Jennifer Korak of Sullivan, with Tiffany Ramberg, senior psychology major from Brownsburg, second.
